The WWAMI program's purpose is to provide access to publicly supported medical education across the five-state region. Idaho’s WWAMI Medical Education Program is a partnership with the University of Washington School of Medicine and the states of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Since 1972, WWAMI has successfully educated many of Idaho’s physicians, with an acute focus on rural medicine. The Idaho ​ WWAMI Program provides medical education and training to students, residents, and practicing physicians throughout the vast state of Idaho. I​d​aho​ WWAMI students complete their Foundations Phase, formerly referred to as “first year”, of medical training at the University of​ Idaho’s Moscow campus. WWAMI is the UW School of Medicine’s one-of-a-kind, multi-state medical education program. The acronym, WWAMI, stands for the states served by the UW School of Medicine: Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.

Each non-Washington WAMI state (Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) has at least one representative on the Executive Committee. Bill Thurston did not set out to be a doctor like his father and grandfather. Now, he’s proud of that shared connection. “Dad never pushed me toward medicine,” Bill said. “But when I started to give it serious consideration, he told me ‘If it’s something you want to do, it’s a very fulfilling career.’” This project is/was supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under grant number U77HP03022, for the WWAMI Area Health Education (WWAMI AHEC) Program Office and its five regional Centers in the total amount of $836,630 for the 2020-2021 fiscal year (with a 1:1 total match of $836,630 from non-federally funded Idaho WWAMI is a good investment for Idaho communities. In August 2015, we began a new UWSOM medical school curriculum at all six regional WWAMI sites. The WWAMI program was developed in Idaho to train Idaho residents in medical studies, to address the need for more primary care physicians practicing in rural areas, to extend the resources and facilities of an excellent medical school into Idaho, to improve the quality of patient care, and to minimize the cost of medical education by the use of existing facilities. Idaho WWAMI Service Learning is uniquely structured to serve the needs of our site.
